romney say, mr. president, you've been on an on poll i go tour, you don't know what you're doing in the middle east, you're waiving the work requirement for welfare. if he keeps going like that, the president is likely to lose his temper, isn't he? >> reporter: oh, i don't think so. look, the challenge facing president obama -- >> you don't? >> reporter: -- is the equivalent of a football team ahead trying to run out the fourth quarter. i think his challenge is to deflect, to respond to those with some element of humor, bemouss bemousseement. he'll cite fact-checkers and say independent analysts say your welfare charge is wrong, that sort of thing. i would expect him to be as much above it and not peevish, arrogant, not condescending as is possible to be. this is a president who doesn't make too many mistakes. >> karen, tonight's focus is domestic. >> yep. >> no bigger domestic issue than the economy, as we know. we'll have a rather open format. do you think we'll actually hear a specific from mr. ro

romney, that's not helping. you better finish the thought. >> i have all the confidence in the world in his ability, in his decisiveness, in his leadership skills, in his understanding of the economy, in his understanding of what's missing right now in the economy, you know, the pieces that are missing to get this jump started. so for me i think it would be the emotional part of it. >> right. he's capable, decisive, and emotionally troubled? well, that is an october surprise. let's get right to our panel this afternoon. with us from washington, msnbc political analyst karen finney, who is a democratic strategist. also julian epstein, who is a democratic strategist, and here in new york msnbc political analyst professor michael eric dyson. professor dyson, mitt romney's wife says she's concerned about his mental health. paul ryan says he's inarticulate. if he can't think straight and he can't speak properly, is mitt romney george bush in disguise? >> i'll tell what you. i want to give you the baseline, i don't ha

the best attack ad on romney is mitt romney. to pick up on michael and michelle's point, what is romney going to come with in the campaign to have a good showing? he can't talk about taxes with tacks being the lowest they have been in 50 years. he can't talk about medicaid and medicare because their policies are unpopular. he can't talk about foreign policy, he doesn't have anything. the only thing he can argue is that obama has not been a good steward of the economy, but as we know, obama has a very good answer to that. and that's on offense. then you think about what he has to do on defense. he's going to be on the defense on the 47%. he's going to be on defense on his tax question. i mean, this is a guy who doesn't have very much to work with at this point. so it's hard for me to see, even if he doesn't make a major gaffe, which he does on a weekly basis, even if he doesn't, what ammunition does he have to actually have a good showing? >> i'm told there are examples of elections turning on debates, president bush for example

romney and mr. ryan are saying it's the president who are into social divisiveness. they are the ones splitting the countries between the have and have nots. they're the one playing the wealth disparity card. >> well, quite the opposite. you know i was a psychologist before i was a political person. in psychology we say that sometimes if someone's got a problem, that they tend to talk about it in ways that is very contradictory to their own feelings. the fact is that mitt romney said 47% of the american people basically are free-loaders parasites. he was talking about good hard working, salt of the earth, ohioans, americans. that started a narrative that built up over a series of months as we watched this man and watched this campaign. and that video confirmed for many ohioans exactly what they were thinking this man may be like. and he can say all he wants to say about class warfare, but he's the one waging it. you know he pays 14.1% in federal income tax. the average ohioan pays more than 20% in f
